Normas éticas
The journal Hombre y Desierto adheres to the ethical principles of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), promoting integrity, transparency, and accountability in academic publishing in anthropology, sociology, history, and the social sciences/humanities. All parties involved (authors, reviewers, editors) must act with honesty, fairness, and respect, avoiding any form of discrimination. These guidelines are designed for electronic journals operating in Open Journal Systems (OJS).
1. Responsibilities of Authors
Originality and Plagiarism: Manuscripts must be original, unpublished, and not under simultaneous review by other journals. Plagiarism—including self-plagiarism and redundant publication—is prohibited. The journal will use anti-plagiarism software to verify originality. Authors must properly cite all sources and obtain permissions for third-party material, following COPE guidance on integrity.
Authorship: Authorship is limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the work (concept, data, analysis, or writing). A corresponding author must be designated. Non-author contributions (e.g., technical support) should be acknowledged in the acknowledgments.
Conflicts of Interest and Funding: Authors must disclose any conflicts of interest (financial, personal, or institutional) that could influence the research or its interpretation. All sources of funding must be transparently disclosed, in line with COPE.
Research Ethics: Authors will ensure respect for participants’ rights and welfare (e.g., informed consent, anonymity, do no harm), complying with local ethical regulations (such as ethics committees or IRBs) and considering cultural sensitivity, especially in anthropological or social studies.
Error Correction: Authors will report significant errors detected after submission and will cooperate in issuing corrections or retractions, following COEP procedures for errata and retractions.
2. Responsibilities of Reviewers
Impartiality and Confidentiality: Reviewers will provide objective, well-founded, and timely evaluations within a double-blind peer-review process. They must declare conflicts of interest (e.g., personal or institutional relationships with authors) and recuse themselves where appropriate. Manuscript confidentiality is mandatory; information may not be used for personal purposes, in accordance with COPE.
Quality of Review: Reviewers will identify potential cases of plagiarism, missing citations, or ethical breaches, and suggest constructive improvements without personal criticism.
3. Responsibilities of Editors
Publication Decision: Editorial decisions will be based on scholarly merit, originality, and relevance, without bias regarding gender, origin, or affiliation. An impartial external peer-review process will be used, following COPE. The final decision to publish any article rests with the Editor.
Transparency and Confidentiality: Editors will protect the confidentiality of manuscripts and participant data. Ethical complaints will be handled through formal investigations, ensuring all parties have an opportunity to respond.
4. Procedures for Ethical Breaches
Minor Breaches (e.g., citation errors): Will be corrected by publishing an erratum notice, with author notification.
Serious Breaches (e.g., plagiarism, data falsification): Will lead to manuscript rejection or withdrawal of the article from OJS and databases. The institutions involved will be notified and, if necessary, a retraction notice will be published, following COPE guidelines.
Reporting Breaches: Any allegation must be supported by evidence. Investigations will be confidential and follow COPE flowcharts for handling complaints.
5. Open Access and OJS
The journal promotes open access under Creative Commons licenses, with no publication charges for authors.
