Abstract
The aim of this essay is to reflect on the importance of the social sciences within the field of medical sciences. It is emphasized that these areas would operate together, criticizing biomedical reductionism to position the impact of social and cultural factors on health and disease processes.
It is suggested that curricula linked to the health professions and specifically to the medical sciences should include this perspective which would strengthen the understanding of social determinants of health defined by the World Health Organization (WHO). It would also have a positive impact on the training of professionals through a curriculum and gradúate profiles that integrate socio-cultural dimensions associated with the Humanities.
